Show notes
This episode is a cross-collaboration between the Hacking Happy podcast and the Elevatory Podcast. Penny Locaso and Anna Jonak sit down for the kind of conversation that rarely gets recorded: what it actually feels like to run a growing business, rather than the version that gets published on Instagram.
The conversation begins with the awakening moment. Almost every owner Anna works with describes a similar point, usually somewhere between the second and fifth year, where the business they built to create freedom has quietly become the thing consuming all of it. Revenue may be climbing. The team may be growing. And yet the owner is working more hours than they did as an employee, with less certainty and considerably more financial exposure. Penny and Anna unpack why this happens, and why it is a structural problem rather than a personal failing.
From there they get into time freedom. Both agree that owners are far better at articulating a revenue goal than a life goal, and that the absence of a clear life goal is exactly why the revenue goal never delivers what it promised. If you do not decide in advance what the business is for, it will expand to fill every hour you have. They talk through the practical mechanics of reclaiming time: deciding what the working week looks like before you decide what the business will take on, protecting one genuinely unavailable block each week, and being honest about which tasks you keep because they matter and which you keep because you enjoy hiding in them.
The middle of the episode deals with anxiety and pressure. Anna is candid that the pressure most owners describe is rarely about workload alone — it is about cash flow visibility, unclear margins, and the feeling of making expensive decisions in the dark. That is a business problem with a business fix. Knowing your numbers does not make the pressure disappear, but it converts a vague dread into a set of decisions you can act on, which is a completely different experience of running the same company.
They then turn to social media, and the way founders compare their unedited daily reality to other people's edited highlight reels. Six-figure launch screenshots almost never include ad spend, refunds, cost of goods or the twelve months of unglamorous work that preceded them. Penny and Anna argue that the antidote is not less ambition but better information: talk to people who will tell you their real numbers, and treat every public success claim as incomplete until you know its cost.
The episode closes on what a sustainable entrepreneurial journey looks like in practice — building a business that can run for a fortnight without you, choosing growth that does not require more of your personal hours, and having honest conversations with people who are a few steps ahead. It is a good listen for any owner who has been quietly wondering whether the exhaustion is just part of the deal. It is not.
