Show notes

Ecommerce is a numbers game. That is not a criticism of creative founders — it is a description of the machine. Traffic multiplied by conversion rate multiplied by average order value equals revenue, and every marketing decision you make is really a decision to move one of those three numbers. In this episode Anna walks through how to read them, what good looks like, and how to use them to decide where the next dollar of effort goes.

The episode starts with the reason so many store owners avoid their data: the platforms give you hundreds of metrics and no hierarchy. Anna's answer is to ignore almost all of it. Track traffic, conversion rate, average order value, cost of acquisition and repeat purchase rate. Five numbers, reviewed weekly, will tell you more about the health of your store than any dashboard with forty tiles on it.

Conversion rate gets the most attention. Anna talks through what typical Australian ecommerce stores actually convert at, why comparing yourself to a global average is misleading when your traffic mix is different, and how to tell the difference between a conversion problem and a traffic quality problem. If cold paid traffic converts at a fifth of your email traffic, the site is not necessarily broken — the audience is. That distinction changes where you spend money.

Average order value is the lever Anna sees ignored most often. Increasing AOV does not require more traffic, more ad spend, or a bigger audience. It requires bundling, thresholds for free shipping set deliberately rather than copied from a competitor, considered upsells at the point of purchase, and a product range organised so that the natural second item is obvious. A ten per cent lift in AOV drops almost entirely to the bottom line, because the cost of acquiring that customer has already been paid.

The second half turns to cost of acquisition and lifetime value. Anna explains how to calculate what a customer is actually worth over twelve months rather than on the first transaction, and why that figure sets the ceiling on what you can afford to pay to acquire them. Most stores that describe their ads as unprofitable are measuring the first order in isolation. Once repeat purchase rate is included, the picture often reverses — and if it does not, you have learned something far more useful than any ROAS screenshot.

Finally, Anna covers the practical habit: a one-page weekly review. Same five numbers, same day each week, written down so you can see the trend rather than the snapshot. The point is not accounting rigour. The point is that decisions made against a trend line are consistently better than decisions made on the feeling you had after checking Shopify at nine o'clock at night.

If this is the constraint in your business right now, it’s what our ecommerce growth program is built around.
